A Quincinera

One night in January when we came out of Olivia's after a wonderful meal, we came upon this group of kids on the street. The girl was celebrating her quincinera & was nice enough to stop so I could snap her photo. Does every 15 year old girl have one? We didn't start sponsoring Gabriela until after her 15th birthday & I never thought to ask if she had one. I guess that's a topic for another email!

Great photo Ann! From what I hear, they spend a lot of money on those parties!

As far as I know, no matter the location in Mexico or economics of the family, every girl has a Quincenera party. It is a right of passage, of becoming officially a woman. I call them "Here she is! How much am I bid?" parties. I could tell stories of how much money is spent on these and the politics involved but won't do it here.

Read Once upon a Quinceanera : Coming of Age in the USA
by Julia Alvarez
Julia interviews not only the girls but their families and all the side businesses involved in putting on a Quince. Interesting buisness, just Google Quinceanera.

Wow - that family dropped a bundle just on the clothing, but she looks beautiful (and so happy). I do know families that did not have a party for their daughter, but I think that is the minority. One of my favorite things at night is listening to the music as it drifts through the windows.
