Collecting Pinecones

This week I have started collecting pinecones for firestarters. We have quite a few tall ( very tall) pine trees that have finally started shedding the cones. I know I could be collecting them to make wreaths or something else crafty --Becky, any suggestions? But for now I'm collecting them to burn. We use our woodstove every day in the cold weather--had it going last night! And buying fatwood gets to beexpensive. So I go out with a bucket & pick up cones! They work great--just enough sap on them to help get the fire going.
Yesterday's haul......

Ann, I keep pinecones in baskets and old wooden boxes around the house in the winter. Sometimes I frost them with that snow spray for Christmas. I've never been ambitious enough, but you can buy the wire frames and make pinecone wreaths! One time when we were in Central California on the coast, we stayed at a place that had GIGANTIC pinecones all over the ground in back of our deck. I still have those!

Thanks, Becky!

Years ago when we were in Central California (just like Beck) we picked up a ton of those huge pine cones and decorated them like Christmas Trees.

I think the easiest thing is to use them as fire starters though.
