A Little Splash of Color amongst the Green...

We have sadly neglected our yard the past few years and are making a valiant effort to spruce it up this spring. As you can see the woods surround the house & this ugly concrete wall is holding up the hill. We have tried to grow ivy up it--only lasted a few years. Well, I got the bright idea to hang some planters on the wall & let the vines cover a little of it. So off I went to Ocean State Job Lot to get the wall planters.... Alan thought they were a great idea until he had to drill holes in the cement to hang them! I have filled them with geraniums and vinca vines--will try that this year & see how they work out......it doesn't get too much sun, so we may try other plants next year.

I bought some tomatoes and peppers a few weeks ago & finally started planting them. Decided my regular vegetable garden isn't getting much sun--the trees are growing---so I'm putting all of them in pots near the house. I will be underplanting with some herbs, too. Hope to have a great harvest. One of the peppers I bought is an Ancho--great for all the MX cooking we do!

Can I relate to an overgrown yard or what?!?! I love the planters on the cement wall...they really dress it up and will look even nicer when the vines drape down. Looks like you have a really nice piece of land.

Thanks, Deb! We have about 10 acres in a pie shaped wedge with the widest out by the road. Alan purchased the land in the late
70's & had the house built--we probably couldn't afford to buy land here now!

Great ideas Ann! I've got a lot of wall to cover at my house. The actual perimeter walls would probably be too hot in the summer for anything to survive, but I have a pool equipment wall where pots would be really cute! We planted some tomatoes in pots where we can move them around in the summer. But I noticed right before I left that something was eating on the new little tomatoes. Craig will have to get the solution while I'm gone!

Wallplanters are a great idea, they do dry out fast, so Geraniums and vinca are both able to survive dry conditions; so long as it isn't too prolonged. The Geranium's bottom leaves will brown if conditions are too dry.
Hey! good gardening JamQueen, wall looks great.

I love the pictures of the garden wall, I'm a sucker for letting plants take their natural course, and a wall is perfect for that.

In case you get the idea to add more to that wall, tell Alan to buy a hammer drill for cement. The bit goes in like butter. Trust me, I know about drilling into cement walls!
