Food, glorious food

We ate at a variety of places, but our favorite is still Seso Loco. We went there on several different days--Seso said starting last week he will be open 7 days a week. This is Aztec soup--I like having the soup & a salad, you also get puffy bread ( almost like a pita) with it. This is one of Alan's favorites--Yucateca chicken. I try & duplicate it at home, but it's never quite the same! It's chicken breast coated with achiote and wrapped in foil ( also has peppers & onions in the packet), then baked . Served with rice & salad.

We bought groceries and ate most lunches in & some breakfasts.
The 2 other reastaurants that really stand out are Victor's Cuban restaurant on Hidalgo--Alan had the Cuban sandwich--said it was great. I had pan fried chicken--amazing. The chicken skin was very crispy, but not oily at all. Served with a nice salad & 2 sides of your choice. A friend had black bean soup & a great looking salad.
And then Olivia's--it was wonderful! More expensive than most places, but for a special night out we really enjoyed it. We had Moroccan tapas to start--small dishes of a few things---
- babaganush, tabule, Moroccan carrot salad and matbuha. Served with pita bread. Then I had excellent lamb chops--I love them, but Alan can't stand the smell of them cooking, so I only have when eating out! Delicious. Alan had Mafrum - potatoes stuffed with ground beef cooked slowly in Moroccan red sauce and served over couscous. The restaurant is great!
I walked everday, so I only gained a few pounds!

Ann, we used to eat at Seso Loco all the time. The last few trips have been low season and they've been closed. That soup looks wonderful! I'll have to try the chicken baked in the achiote. Any suggestions on cooking it just right? :) And Victor's Cuban restaurant is one of my favorites. I love the Cuban fish filet with rice and fried bananas as sides. The Cuban sauce on the fish is wonderful! Now I'm hungry!

I do it in a 400 degree oven for about 1/2 hour. I put vegetables like asparagus in the packet sometimes. I guess it's trial & error a little. Just make sure it stays moist!

MMmmmmm. Looks delish! I just found out yesterday that my reservation to Cancun with VivaAerobus has been extended by two days in May/June, so that will give me more time to try Isla restaurants that I haven't been to yet! Keep posting more!

Oh that food looks good. I had dinner at Seso Loco one night last month. It must have been an off night because their usually really good pizza was just OK. Most of the times I have eaten there I have been pleased. However, their mixed drinks are awful and to top it off they are 2x1 awful drinks. Why don't I remember that? Warning do not order either a Mojito or margarita there.
I really like Victor's. I have never had a bad meal there. We ate there New Year’s Eve. Victor was running his ass off waiting tables. We had really slow service but it was really busy so it was OK. It wasn’t like we were in a hurry to go anywhere. When Victor brought us our check he apologized for the slow service and the fact that everyone came at once. Victor then told us to check the bill to make sure it was correct. A few nights later we stopped there just for Mojitos. Victor couldn’t break a $200 peso bill so he told us not to worry and pay him the next night. After dinner at Sancochos we stopped back to pay Victor and he apologized to us for having to come back and pay him. He told us we could have waited until the next night. It’s nice to be a regular and be treated that way.

I LOVE all of your photos!!!

Great photos. I can't remember if I've ever eaten at Seso Loco or not, but I love Aztec soup. Thanks for the tip! Great pictures, as usual. Thanks!
