Baby White Bison

The naming ceremony for our neighbors white bison was yesterday.  Except for the torrential rain it was a great afternoon!  Luckily the heaviest of the rain held off til the ceremony was almost over.  Now the bison is called " Yellow Medicine Dancing Boy"

Rose of Sharon

We have several Rose of Sharon growing around the yard.  They are a prolific re-seeder!  I pull out lots of the new shoots & try to give away as many as I can!
This is the largest one that is growing next to the house--it has both purple ( lavender) and white flowers .  Don't know how that happens, but it's pretty!

An Olympic Connection..about as close as I'll get!

My grandfather, Peter  Patrick Carney was an avid sports enthusiast who competed in many sports and wrote about others as a writer for several magazines and newspapers. As many of you know both my Mom & her sister passed away last year & my brother & I ( & his family) cleaned out both places.
My Aunt had a treasure trove of family papers--photos & many of the originals of the stories & articles that my grandfather wrote.  He died when I was about 4 or 5 so I have few memories of him....so going through all these articles has been great--I found out things I never knew!  I just want to quote part of an article he wrote

"Teams I captained won the five man bowling championship  of Trenton (NJ) for 5 successive years.  I was never less than second in the individual championship and one year had an average of 199 for 177 games.  Whether this is good or not I will leave to you.  I could clip out a quarter mile in better than 50 seconds, run the half in better than 2 minutes and do some other things on the track.  I had aspirations of being a member of the 1908 Olympic team to Athens but in the spring of 1907 I broke down and haven't ran a race since.  Hopes of glory in an Olympic meet went with the straining of tendons in the thigh"

Not sure when he wrote this--one of the few things that's not dated.  I would guess the photo is from the early 1900's--my Aunt was born in1913 & all took place before.

Sunday Still

The only perfumed lily that bloomed this year.  For the last few years I have had a problem with red lily beetles & never seem to be able to control them!  They basically suck the life out of the plants!  You can see in the background how badly the leaves of the plant are damaged!  I think I will be digging these up & throwing them away!  There are so many other plants that grow well for me that I can replace these with!

Saturday Single

Well, it's been a few days since I blogged so I thought I'd better get on the stick & post something!  I try for 5 days a week & most weeks I accomplish that, but haven't been in the mood lately & I haven't been taking many photos either.  This is a new type of tomato ( for me) that I'm growing this year--called Roman Candle---85 days. Beautiful, neon yellow,

fruits are
bursting with intense sweetness and flavor. A wonderful
new tomato that originated as a “sport” from
Mr. John Swenson’s Speckled Roman. A new favorite
of market growers, it is quite colorfulPosted by Picasa

How Many of You Have a Photo Like this?

Lots, I bet!  This was taken back in 1963 or 64 when the dentist decided I needed to get braces!    I was going through a pile of old photos last week & came across it!  I wore braces most of the time I was in high school........  Love that little flip in the back of my hair!

Another New One!

I bought a few new perennials this year, not knowing what would survive in the gardens after the tree disaster.  One  that just bloomed is this Rudbeckia.  Got a bargain yesterday--Sunflower plants for $2.99 each at Aldi's!  Picked up 2 and put them in the center of the vegetable garden.

A Survivor

When the large tree came down n our yard this spring alot of the flowers in my beds were destroyed.  So when I went out this morning and saw this blooming I was happy!  This is the Tomato Soup Echinacea that I had planted a few years ago & I was sure it was gone!  Tried to get another plant, but it was already sold out.  So now I have quite a garden of different Echinaceas.

Sunday Still

Went to a great part last night at the lake near our house.    Across the lake fireworks were shot off.  My photos didn't turn out very good,  my timing was off taking the pictures, but here's one of them!

Saturday Single

I haven't been out much to take any photos but I was recently given 2 plants of a new variety of Echinacea called Glowing Dreams.  I love the color & it fits in well with the other echinacea plants I already have growing!
